Lordi. Обзор на альбом «Killection» (2020)
Этот альбом кажется непонятным с самого начала. До меня не сразу дошло, что в его названии есть смысл. Но всё стало понятно при первом же взгляде на обложку – игра слов «kill» («убийство») и «collection» («коллекция»). Собрание голов животных и ещё одной, не совсем человеческой, настраивают на общую тематику хоррора.
Подзаголовок – «A fictional compilation album» («Вымышленный сборник»). Думаю, подразумевается, что сюжеты песен не имеют связи с реальностью. Учитывая распространённость и популярность такого явления, как поиск отсылок (пасхалок), это примечание чрезвычайно полезно. И, возможно, убережёт кого-то от потери времени в поиске скрытых смыслов.
В альбоме 15 композиций (не буду брать в расчёт бонус-трек на виниле). Именно композиций, не песен. 4 из них представляют собой кусочки радио-эфира. Собственно, с этого альбом и начинается: джингл и музыкальная нарезка знакомят слушателя с радиостанцией «SCG 10». Ведущий отвечает на звонки в студию, но с каждым его собеседником в ходе разговора случается что-то ненормальное и сверхъестественное.
Пройдёмся по песням.
«Horror for hire» («Ужас напрокат») – песня о боли, нужной для избавления от скуки. Практически не запоминается и ничем не выделяется.
«Shake the baby silent» («Тихонько укачать ребёнка») – отличается использованием семплов детского плача. Кажется текст о том, что у погибшей в автокатастрофе женщины остался ребёнок, которого нужно укачать (потрясти - shake), чтобы он перестал плакать.
«Like a bee to the honey» («Как пчела для мёда») – записана совместно с Майклом Монро, вокалистом группы «Hanoi Rocks». Примечательна своими авторами: Пол Стэнли и Жан Бовуар. Жуткая песня о желании вернуть любимого человека.
«Apollyon» («Аполлион»/ «Аббадон») – хороша своей композицией и звучанием. Но, к сожалению, демоническая тематика до конца не раскрыта, мало самого персонажа. «Blow my fuse» («Сорвать мой предохранитель») – своим звучанием похожа на кантри. В сочетании с классическим хард-роком звучит очень свежо и интересно.
«I dug a hole in the yard for you» («Я вырыл для тебя яму во дворе») – самый интересный и захватывающий сюжет во всём альбоме. Романтичная история, перешедшая в одержимость: закопать любимого человека, чтобы всегда знать о его местоположении и уберечь своё сердце от разбивания.
«Zombimbo» - также интересна сюжетом: молодая девушка умерла от остановки сердца, танцуя буги. Но даже став зомби ей придётся танцевать, хотя в теле уже нет души.
«Up to No Good» («Ничего хорошего») – песня от лица ребёнка или даже подростка о желании принимать самостоятельные решения и вообще быть независимым от влияния родителей. Вечно актуальная тема.
«Cutterfly» («Летающий резак») – изначально казалось, что текст песни про какого-то маньяка-карателя, взявшего себе миссию вершить правосудие. Упоминание в самом конце текста ДНК сбило с толку.
«Evil» («Зло») – изображение тёмных, потаённых уголков человеческой души. Удивление открытию в себе тёмной и злой стороны.
«Scream Demon» («Крик демона») – ставит в тупик. Непонятный экзорцизм, похожий на издевательство над хоть и близким, но нелюбимым человеком.
На песни «Shake the baby silent», «Like a bee to the honey» и «I dug a hole in the yard for you» выпущены официальные видеоклипы.
У двух первых песен они выглядят как видеокомиксы, имеют хорошую графику и спецэффекты. Чего нельзя сказать о клипе на последнюю песню. В нём намешано всё: игровая часть с актёрами, часть, где группа просто играет в отдельной локации и часть, в которой музыканты – часть постановочного видео. Действие развивается достаточно медленно и диссонирует с самой песней.
В целом, альбом не плохой, но не очень хороший. Спустя полгода с момента релиза не попал ни в один чарт. Достаточно лёгкий в звучании и восприятии, но не всегда понятный, если не являешься постоянным слушателем и слабо разбираешься в специфических текстах-страшилках.
Lordi. Review on the album "Killection" (2020)
This album seems unclear from the very beginning. I didn’t understand right away that there was a sense in his name. But everything became clear at the first glance at the cover – a play on the words “kill” and “collection”. A collection of animal heads and another, not entirely human, set up on the general theme of horror.
The subtitle is “A fictional compilation album”. I think it is understood that the plots of the songs have no connection with reality. Given the prevalence and popularity of referral searches, this note is extremely helpful. And, perhaps, it will save someone from losing time in the search for hidden meanings.
There are 15 tracks in the album (I won’t take into account the bonus track on vinyl). Namely compositions, not songs. 4 of them are parts of radioether. Actually, the album begins with this: the jingle and musical cuts introduce the listener to the «SCG 10» radio station. The presenter answers the calls to the studio, but something abnormal and supernatural happens to each of his interlocutor during the conversation.
Let's go through the songs.
«Horror for hire» is a song about the pain needed to get rid of boredom. It is practically not remembered and does not stand out. «Shake the baby silent» – differentiated by the use of baby crying samples. It seems the text that the woman who died in a car accident left a child who needs to be shaken to stop crying.
«Like a bee to the honey» – recorded with Michael Monroe, vocalist of the band “Hanoi Rocks”. Notable for its authors: Paul Stanley and Jean Beauvoir. A terrible song about the desire to return a loved one.
«Apollyon» is good for its composition and sound. But, unfortunately, the demonic theme is not fully disclosed, the character itself is not enough.
«Blow my fuse» is like a country genre with its sound. Combined with classic hard rock, it sounds very fresh and interesting.
«I dug a hole in the yard for you» is the most interesting and exciting plot in the whole album. A romantic story that turned into an obsession: to bury a loved one, to always know about its location and protect his heart from breaking.
«Zombimbo» is also interesting in the plot: a young girl died from a cardiac arrest while dancing boogie. But even after becoming a zombie, she’ll have to dance, although the body no longer has a soul.
«Up to no good» is a song on behalf of a child or even a teenager about the desire to make independent decisions and in general to be independent of the influence of parents. Forever relevant subject.
«Cutterfly» – initially it seemed that the lyrics about some maniac-punisher who took on a mission to administer justice. The mention at the very end of the DNA text was confusing.
«Evil» – the image of the dark, hidden corners of the human soul. Surprise at the discovery of the dark and evil sides.
«Scream Demon» – confound. An incomprehensible exorcism, similar to a mockery of a close, but unloved person.
Official videos have been released for the songs «Shake the baby silent», «Like a bee to the honey» and «I dug a hole in the yard for you».
For the first two songs, the animation is done in the style of comics, they have good graphics and special effects. What can’t be said about the clip for the last song. Everything is mixed in it: the game part with the actors, the part where the group just plays in a separate location and the part in which the musicians are piece of the production video. The action develops rather slowly and discord with the song itself.
In general, the album is not bad, but not very good. Six months have passed since the release, but he never hit a single chart. Easy enough in sound and perception, but not always clear, if you are not a regular listener and you are poorly versed in specific horror texts.
